About WarRock

Info:

It seems nowadays not only do you need an expensive gaming rig to get into the latest games, you also have to shell out $50-60 per game. Well, that can be said for most games, but not War Rock. As the 3rd game they're releasing through their Free2Play model, War Rock - a massive online first-person shooter - is free to download, free to play, and free to enjoy (and it looks great too).

Just in case it didn't sink in yet, WarRock is being released over K2 Networks Free2Play, meaning that the game itself is entirely free. Players who want additional content, new servers, more maps, and basically anything else that could be added, can purchase them through in-game money earned from doing well or real cash. This community-based approach has already worked wonderfully for games like Knight Online and Global Mu Online, and helps to ensure that the games are both high in quality and that everything they add to it is fan-driven.

That said, WarRock looks like it's shaping up to be a wonderful game. It most closely resembles the Battlefield franchise as teams try to secure outposts with up to 16 players on each side. The finished product, however, will have plenty of straight-forward action across quite a few different play modes, including free-for-alls, team competitions, one-on-one death match, and last man standing.

Each player will get to choose from a variety of character classes which are fairly self-explanatory:

  • Engineers: Armed with a submachine-gun and a Spanner wrench, allowing them to repair both friendly and enemy vehicles
  • Medics: They carry the same guns as engineers, but have medpacks which can be used on themselves as well as teammates
  • Snipers: 'Nuff said.
  • Assault: The main infantry, they come with a Daewoo K2 Assault Rifle and fragmentation grenades. They'll kill a lot and they'll die a lot.
  • Heavy Trooper: Anti-artillery unit.

Also, all players will have a short-ranged pistol and can engage in hand-to-hand combat if the going gets tough.

One of the goals of WarRock (other than to provide a free and excellent game) is to make sure players with lower-end PCs will still be able to play, but those who have invested some cash into their machine will also be rewarded. The beta we saw at E3 already featured a silky-smooth frame-rate and fairly detailed character models and environments, and it's my understanding that the final release will even support HDR.
